FAVOURITE ALBUMS OF 2018
So many brilliant releases in 2018, it’s been a huge year in music! I’ve compiled some of my favourite albums from the past 12 months in no particular order…
Kamasi Washington – Heaven and Earth
Kamasi is flying from strength to strength. This gorgeous full-length follow-up to The Epic has been worth the wait. After so many spins of this record I’m still digesting it and still hearing new parts and elements each time. Pure magic.
Allysha Joy- Acadie: Raw
I adored 30/70’s Elevate album last year and was so excited to get a copy of Allysha’s debut solo record. Gorgeous vocals, intelligent lyrics, great grooves. From start to finish the album is cleverly thought out and wonderfully produced. Her live show is soulful and heartfelt and her ability to create a family of musicians and vocalists around her to deliver her neo soul jazz vision is a testament to the quality of the compositions. Highly recommend.
Everything is Love – The Carters
Oh yes! Love this album for the lovers. Beyonce and Jay-Z collaborate on a full-length record of new tracks filled with intelligent lyrics – sometimes heart wrenching, sometimes sad, sometimes boasting, other times just witty and reflective of the times. As individual artists they are both incredible but seeing them work together to produce a record that is fresh and inventive is inspiring. Couple goals indeed.
Soulpersona ft Princess Freesia – Sunset City
This is one of the most fun collection of remixes, jams and disco treats of the year and the ultimate record to listen to before heading out for a Saturday night party. Mind you though this has also been my ultimate soundtrack while getting ready for the day job – I highly recommend a 7minute disco boogie on a Monday morning to Sunset City, really helps the Monday-blues feeling!) Highlight tracks: Sunset City remixed by John Morales and SCPD – undoubtedly the BEST TV police show soundtrack inspired song of all time. Princess Freesia is a lyrical poetic genius.
Geography – Tom Misch
This album is a groover and a grower and definitely a favourite of 2018. South of The River is a JAM. Love the Detoirt Swindle Mix also!
Rosalia – El Mal Querer
This album is just WOW! I’m so excited, enthralled and entranced by this incredible artist who is taking flamenco to a whole new sphere. The artwork, the design, the film clip, the production is next level and the compositions and vocals are flawless. In my opinion Rosalia is one of the most exciting artists to keep an eye on worldwide.
Mildlife – Phase
Local jazz soul space rock outfit has delighted with their debut full length Phase. This record is right up my alley – in the pocket grooves, synthesiser delights, wicked guitar and seventies futurism.
