For those who sadly cant afford a trip to Mauritius or somewhere else exotic over summer like me…alas there are some amazing events on in Melbourne to keep us entertained during the warmer months. I’ve compiled here a bit of an ideas list of things to do in city of Soul over summer.  Also some possible ideas for holiday gifts also! Tickets under the tree anyone?

Cinema under the stars..

One of my absolute favorite things to do in summer is go to the botanical gardens around sunset with a picnic rug and a bottle of wine to watch a film under the stars at Moonlight Cinema. There’s a view of the city skyline and guaranteed swarms of bats flying overhead. Mix of classic films and recent blockbusters. For dog lovers, there is a pooch friendly night too!

My picks:

For a girl’s night out? Dirty Dancing 2nd Jan

Do also check out:

The Shadow Electric outdoor cinema at the Abbottsford Convent. Some great gigs over the summer here too!

Rooftop Cinema. Films set on top of Curtin House in the city for cult films with a view!

Mossvale Park: Summer of Soul

Ok technically not in Melbourne, but this one-day festival is shaping up to be well worth the trip! Featuring the incredible Lee Fields and the Expressions, Clairy Browne and The Bombay Royale!

So Frenchy So Chic

Ok I am cheating a little; this is out of the city too…but definitely worth the trip! French music, food and wine in the beautiful surrounds of Werribee Mansion. Gorgeous day out, pack your sunscreen and enjoy living the good life frenchy style!

Shakespeare in the gardens

A Midsummer Nights Dream Under the Stars runs from 21st December – 15th March. One of my favourite Shakespeare plays held in the Royal Botanic garden.  Date night!

Sideshows and Gigs to check out

Love gigs but hate festival crowds? I can relate. Instead, skip the queues and the crowds and opt for the sideshows.

My picks:

Solange (Falls Fest sideshow) The Prince 7/1/2014

Mountain Mocha Killimanjaro (Falls Festival Sideshow) The Corner Hotel 9/1/14

Lee Fields and The Expressions (Mossvale sideshow) 8/1/14 the Corner

The Return of the Sun Ra Arkestra (MIJF summer show) 19/1/2013 The Forum

Major Lazer (Big Day Out Sideshow) The Palace 21/1/14

Charles Bradley (Panama Fest Sideshow) 6/3/2014 The Corner

Melbourne is renowned for shopping! Forget Chaddy and head to the markets for unique designs and vintage finds.

My picks

The Big Design Market, Royal Exhibition Centre 6-8 December

Just in time for unique Xmas gifts!

Side-table-322-green_large Bushwick-Navy-1

Also browse:  Suzuki night market! Featuring live bands every Wednesday night. Queen Victoria Market, City.

Discover vintage paradise.. The Lost and Found Market

A note on shopping: Unless you are a sucker for punishment avoid Doncaster and Chadstone Westfields on boxing day! The sales last for around a month so relax on Boxing Day with leftovers and a book instead and shop later in the month.

The Royal Botanic Runway

Cinema, Shakespeare and now Fashion?! It all seems to be happening in the Botanical gardens this summer. This inaugral event teams fashion with flora with environmental awareness. An open-air runway will feature the work of designers Akira Isogawa and Collette Dinningan.  After party drinks in the Botanic bar. Sounds like fashionista bliss. Thursday 30/1/2013

Melbourne Food and Wine festival

Oishi soo! Foodie events galore are on during the tail end of the summer for a sensory indulge..

My Pick’s

–   Dancing with the Tides – is a North-East African event with Ethiopian food, coffee and music.  Konjo Café, Footscray 28/2/14-8/3/14

–    Martini Masterclass with Australian Bartender of the year! The Everleigh, Fitzroy 4/3/2013

 Wet weather?

Bound to get some dismal weather over the summer, it IS Melbourne after all! When the clouds roll over, head to our cultural meccas.

My picks:

Muscle Shoals doco screening at ACMI from December 27 to Sunday January 19

Melbourne Now exhibition at NGV from November to March 23

See you there!
